Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters sheltering people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after more than 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 people of a one family — 72-year-old a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least five others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the debris that had entombed their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over 2 million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms away while enduring shortages of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the colder season. This marks the 3rd cold season since the war between Israel and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when militants attacked Israeli territory and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.
