When Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Popular Picture Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her back yard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard loud noises echoing around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone moving in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of valour in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams attending to dozens of the injured.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to be shared by the community, with the patrol base next to the site of the attack becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including going into the ocean to assist people needing help.

After the events, comments of appreciation were shared. An online statement conveyed thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over darkness”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our responders,” the team wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it helps those involved.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the shooting began right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many powerful narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a mayor.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in ensuring our world-famous coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
