The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
