People have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of six people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south, medics said.

The region's health ministry announced a significant number of the {territ
