The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France is preparing a personal account in the coming weeks named Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts the period spent in jail.

The revelation emerged less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison while he contests the guilty verdict for unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to obtain political financing linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“In prison visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in an extract, suggesting the book will focus on his musings from seclusion instead of a broader observation on the strained and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader was present via screen from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, showing great humanity, easing this nightmare tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, was the first former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is did he manage to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail but escapes to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a space roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in Paris. Two bodyguards occupied an adjacent room.

Reports indicated that he consumed only yoghurts in prison worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer released than inside. “He received menacing messages, has heard screaming during nighttime and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following a French court sentenced him to a half-decade term for illegal collaboration related to a plan to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for the coming spring.
