The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
