Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
