Combatants chuckle as they ride on the back of a pick-up truck, speeding past a row of nine dead bodies and moving towards the setting Sudan's evening sky.

"Observe this extensive accomplishment. Look at this act of mass destruction," a combatant shouts.

The individual smiles as he turns the recording device on himself and his associate fighters, their paramilitary identification visible: "The victims will all perish in this manner."

The combatants are exulting in a mass killing that relief organizations suspect killed over thousands of people in the Sudan's metropolis of el-Fasher during October.

A City Severed from the Outside

After maintaining the city under blockade for almost two years, from the summer the paramilitary force advanced to reinforce its position and blockade the leftover civilian population.

Satellite images reveal that troops began to erect a enormous earth barrier - a elevated dirt embankment - around the boundaries of el-Fasher, closing roads and preventing relief supplies.
