New York's next mayor confirms plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his modest Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
