Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
