The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
