Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Criticism
Individuals from across the political divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a vile and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
